What to Do When Your Phone or Tablet is Frozen

3 minute read • Updated February 2026

Is your phone or tablet screen not responding when you touch it? This is called being "frozen" — and it's very common. The fix is simple!

🔄 The Universal Fix

Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds

Keep holding it even after the screen goes dark. Then release and press the power button once to turn it back on.

This works on almost every phone and tablet!

Specific Instructions by Device

iPhone (with Face ID)

Press and hold the side button AND the volume up button together for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone (with Home button)

Press and hold the side button AND the Home button together for 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

Android Phone or Tablet

Hold the power button for 10-15 seconds. The phone will restart on its own.

iPad

Press and quickly release volume up, then press and quickly release volume down, then press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears.

Will I Lose Anything?

No! This is just like restarting your device. All your photos, apps, and information stay safe. You might lose something you were typing if you hadn't saved it, but everything else is fine.

Why Does This Happen?

Sometimes phones and tablets get confused when too many things are happening at once. Restarting gives them a fresh start — just like how a good night's sleep helps us feel better!
