How to Video Call Your Grandkids — Zoom, FaceTime & WhatsApp

7 minute read • Updated February 2026

Want to see your grandchildren's faces while you talk to them? Video calling makes that possible! It's like a regular phone call, but you can see each other on the screen.

This guide will help you get started, no matter what device you have.

First: Which App Should You Use?

The easiest thing is to use whatever app your family already uses. Ask them: "What do you use for video calls?" Common answers are:

📱 FaceTime (iPhone & iPad)

If you have an iPhone or iPad and your grandkids do too, FaceTime is the easiest option. It's already on your device!

To make a FaceTime call:

  1. Open the FaceTime app (green icon with a video camera)
  2. Tap the + button at the top
  3. Type your grandchild's name or phone number
  4. Tap the Video button (the camera icon)
  5. Wait for them to answer — you'll see their face!

To answer a FaceTime call: When someone FaceTimes you, tap the green Accept button.

💬 WhatsApp

WhatsApp works on any smartphone and is free. Many families use it because it works even when calling other countries.

To make a WhatsApp video call:

  1. Open WhatsApp (green icon with a phone)
  2. Find the person you want to call in your chats
  3. Tap the video camera icon at the top right
  4. Wait for them to answer

🎥 Zoom

Zoom is great for calling multiple grandchildren at once — like a family gathering on screen!

To join a Zoom call (easiest):

  1. Ask your grandchild to send you a Zoom link
  2. Click the link — it will open Zoom
  3. Tap Join with Video
  4. Tap Call using Internet Audio
  5. You're in! Wave hello!
💡 Tip: Schedule a regular time for video calls, like "Sunday at 4pm." This way, everyone knows when to expect the call, and it becomes a lovely routine!

Tips for Better Video Calls

Common Questions

Do video calls cost money?

FaceTime, WhatsApp, and Zoom are all free. They use your internet connection (WiFi), not your phone minutes.

Can they see my whole house?

They can only see what's behind you and to your sides. Find a spot with a nice background, or just don't worry about it — your grandkids want to see YOU, not your living room!

What if I look bad on camera?

Your grandchildren love you and want to see your face. Don't let this stop you from connecting!
