How to Fix WiFi Not Working — A Simple Guide for Seniors
Is your internet not working? Don't worry — this happens to everyone, and it's usually easy to fix. In most cases, you can get back online in just a few minutes by following these simple steps.
The good news: You don't need to understand how the internet works to fix this problem. Just follow along, step by step.
What You'll Need
Nothing! Just your hands and a little patience.
The Simple Fix (Works 80% of the Time)
Find Your Internet Box
Look for a box with blinking lights. It's usually near where the internet cable comes into your home — often in a living room, office, or closet. It might say "Xfinity," "AT&T," "Spectrum," or another company name on it.
Find the Power Cord
Look at the back of the box. You'll see a black cord going into the wall. This is the power cord. Gently pull it out of the box (not out of the wall).
Wait 30 Seconds
With the cord unplugged, count slowly to 30. This gives the box time to fully turn off. You can count out loud: "One Mississippi, two Mississippi..." all the way to thirty.
Plug It Back In
Put the power cord back into the box. You'll see the lights start blinking. This is normal — the box is waking up.
Wait 2 Minutes
Give the box about 2 minutes to fully start up. The lights will blink for a while, then become steady. You might want to make yourself a cup of tea while you wait!
Try Your Internet
Now try opening a website or app. If it works — wonderful! You fixed it yourself!
Still Not Working?
If the steps above didn't fix the problem, don't worry. Sometimes the issue is with your internet company, not your equipment. Here are a few things to check:
- Are all the cables plugged in firmly?
- Is there a power outage in your area?
- Did you get a message from your internet company about maintenance?

Why Does This Happen?
Your internet box is like a tiny computer. Sometimes it gets confused and needs to restart — just like how restarting your phone or computer can fix problems. Unplugging it and plugging it back in is like giving it a fresh start.
This is completely normal and happens to everyone. It doesn't mean anything is broken!
